My Studio
My Voiceover studio
When it comes to voiceover recordings, nothing is quite as important as the space within which the audio is recorded.
The key aspects to look out for are:
Isolated and quiet - For great sounding voiceover recordings it is integral that there are no background sounds to distract or compromise the recording. This also extends into having a low noise floor, this refers to the base room tone; every room has one. Turn off all your devices and you’ll hear it. However high levels of ambient noise can ruin a professional audio recording, which is why my booth’s noise floor is set to -80 db RMS, twenty below the industry standard.
No sound reflections - If you, like me, enjoy singing in the shower, you’ll notice that the reason it’s great is that the sound bounces back at you and you can hear yourself. Unfortunately, this is not an ideal environment for voiceover. Booths and studios must be specially treated using acoustic dampening materials (like the foam and felt you can see on my walls) in order to minimise these reflections.
A stable and repeatable environment - Many home studios will be setup in prebuilt spaces such as wardrobes, or tents erected inside a room using acoustic blankets. These are great options, however they rely heavily on the space around them not being tampered with. My studio is a purpose built space that delivers the same world class quality everytime.
